Busiest summer on record at London Luton Airport
London Luton Airport enjoyed its busiest summer on record this year.
The London airport has revealed that it welcome 5.3 million passengers over the summer period, which covered June, July and August.
The record-breaking passenger numbers represented a 7.3% growth when compared to the same period in 2018.
Hotspots for passengers travelling out of London Luton Airport this summer included Malaga, Barcelona, Lisbon and Palma de Mallorca, all of which were in the top 10 destinations for summer 2019.
Luton passengers also flocked to Tel Aviv, which made it onto the top 10 destination list.
However, the most popular summer destination for Luton Airport passengers during summer 2019 was Amsterdam. The Netherlands capital maintained its top spot, welcoming a huge 198,000 passengers from London Luton Airport.
Alberto Martin, CEO of LLA, said: “The summer period is always a busy time for the airport, and this year was no exception."
Luton Airport's management team has just announced plans to introduce an express train service to the airport. The airport will work in partnership with Abellio, the new owners of East Midlands Railway, to bring the new service to London Luton Airport passengers.
The Luton Airport express rail service is due to be launched in December 2020. The service will run from London St Pancras to London Luton Airport every 30 minutes, rapidly reducing the current journey time for passengers travelling from central London to Luton Airport.
Luton Airport CEO, Alberto Martin, added: "Our new agreement with Abellio marks a step-change in rail connectivity between London and its fastest-growing airport, and will deliver the improved travel experience which our passengers deserve.”
Earlier this month, Luton Airport announced that 83% of its passengers had declared the airport "good" or "excellent" in an independent customer satisfaction survey.
